Get to Know Our PTA Programs,
and School PTA Supported Programs
The PTA Reflections Program is an annual creative arts competition open to all Horizon Elementary students. This program allows students to display their artistic talents, creativity and vision through their choice of several artistic mediums, including the written word, visual arts, music or movement. Awards will be granted per school, and winners who advance will compete against the other winners in our school district, and those advancing go on to state and possibly nationals. It is open to all grades and will take place in the early part of the school year. For more information about Reflections, visit our Reflections page,
Donuts for Dads
Donuts for Dads is an event that brings dads into our school to celebrate with their children, and that acts as a kick-off party for Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). This is always a fun and much appreciated event, and we look forward to seeing all the dads and kids there this year.
Dads of Great students
Watch D.O.G.S. is one of Horizon's most exciting and rewarding programs and is spearheaded by our principal Mr. Rodney Richardson, and coordinated by our guidance counselor Mrs. Jennifer Walker, with additional support from the PTA. Who are Watch DOGS? Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer to serve at least one day a year in a variety of school activities as assigned by the school principal or other administrator. Watch DOGS at Horizon spend time helping children at the car line (morning and afternoon), reading stories, helping the teachers, or taking the kids on a duty free lunch. The kids are always so excited to see a dad at school. Take some time to hang out and have great fun. Your presence can inspire and provide a role model to the children in our community. For more information, visit our Watch D.O.G.S. page.
Muffins with Moms
Muffins with Moms is a morning that brings moms into our school to celebrate with their children. Last year's inaugural event was hugely popular, and this year's event will be even better! This event is held in the spring, and will take place in the morning before school.
Fire Safety Week
With the help of the Madison City Firefighters, during fire safety week our students learn how to stay safe in a fire. They get to tour the traveling "Fire House" and learn how to escape from a burning building. PTA helps coordinate this event along with the school.
Teacher Support All Year
- PTA provides start-up funds of $100 per teacher so that teachers can stock their classrooms with necessary supplies. We also provide other help throughout the year.
- PTA also coordinates one duty-free lunch per month, where a parent volunteer takes each teacher's students to lunch so that the teacher can have a must-deserved break. PTA also assists with coordinating room parents and provides training for room parents. Click HERE for more information about Room Parent Duties.
Each year we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in May to show our teachers how much we appreciate all of their hard work. The PTA plans special events for the celebration, and we look forward to your help. All year our Hospitality Chair provides small treats to celebrate birthdays for teachers and staff.
Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is in October each year and has a new theme each year. PTA helps the school coordinate fun, educational events throughout the week, all geared toward teaching kids to stay drug free.
Space Week is a week long event Horizon holds in May where every student gets to experience and explore the wonders of space through in-class lessons, hands on learning, and guest speakers. Spearheaded by our Enrichment teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Bero, this event is always enjoyed by the students! PTA assists the school with the activities for the week.
